Angular Material is a UI component library provided by Angular. Let's see how to add the module to your angular project.
Setting Up the Library
Open your project and run the command below (You can also use 'npm install' but 'ng add' automatically completes all the necessary configurations except for adding the module to the module file).
ng add @angular/material
Then it will ask if you would like to proceed. Select 'yes'. After that you have to choose a theme followed by deciding whether to set up global font styles and animation.
Adding the Module
To use the library, you have to add the module to the 'app.module.ts' file. Following better practice, I am going to create a separate module for the Angular Material. Run the following command to create a new module.
ng g m modules/angular-material
Add the modules in the module.
// angular-material.module.ts
import { NgModule } from '@angular/core';
import { CommonModule } from '@angular/common';
// angular material
import { MatAutocompleteModule } from '@angular/material/autocomplete';
import { MatBadgeModule } from '@angular/material/badge';
import { MatBottomSheetModule } from '@angular/material/bottom-sheet';
import { MatButtonModule } from '@angular/material/button';
import { MatButtonToggleModule } from '@angular/material/button-toggle';
import { MatCardModule } from '@angular/material/card';
import { MatCheckboxModule } from '@angular/material/checkbox';
import { MatChipsModule } from '@angular/material/chips';
import { MatRippleModule } from '@angular/material/core';
import { MatDatepickerModule } from '@angular/material/datepicker';
import { MatDialogModule } from '@angular/material/dialog';
import { MatDividerModule } from '@angular/material/divider';
import { MatExpansionModule } from '@angular/material/expansion';
import { MatFormFieldModule } from '@angular/material/form-field';
import { MatGridListModule } from '@angular/material/grid-list';
import { MatIconModule } from '@angular/material/icon';
import { MatInputModule } from '@angular/material/input';
import { MatListModule } from '@angular/material/list';
import { MatMenuModule } from '@angular/material/menu';
import { MatPaginatorModule } from '@angular/material/paginator';
import { MatProgressBarModule } from '@angular/material/progress-bar';
import { MatProgressSpinnerModule } from '@angular/material/progress-spinner';
import { MatRadioModule } from '@angular/material/radio';
import { MatSelectModule } from '@angular/material/select';
import { MatSidenavModule } from '@angular/material/sidenav';
import { MatSlideToggleModule } from '@angular/material/slide-toggle';
import { MatSliderModule } from '@angular/material/slider';
import { MatSnackBarModule } from '@angular/material/snack-bar';
import { MatSortModule } from '@angular/material/sort';
import { MatStepperModule } from '@angular/material/stepper';
import { MatTableModule } from '@angular/material/table';
import { MatTabsModule } from '@angular/material/tabs';
import { MatToolbarModule } from '@angular/material/toolbar';
import { MatTooltipModule } from '@angular/material/tooltip';
import { MatTreeModule } from '@angular/material/tree';
@NgModule({
declarations: [],
imports: [CommonModule]
})
export class AngularMaterialModule {}
Add 'export' next to the 'import' and export all the modules we imported from above.
// angular-material.module.ts
import { NgModule } from '@angular/core';
import { CommonModule } from '@angular/common';
// angular material
import { MatAutocompleteModule } from '@angular/material/autocomplete';
import { MatBadgeModule } from '@angular/material/badge';
import { MatBottomSheetModule } from '@angular/material/bottom-sheet';
import { MatButtonModule } from '@angular/material/button';
import { MatButtonToggleModule } from '@angular/material/button-toggle';
import { MatCardModule } from '@angular/material/card';
import { MatCheckboxModule } from '@angular/material/checkbox';
import { MatChipsModule } from '@angular/material/chips';
import { MatRippleModule } from '@angular/material/core';
import { MatDatepickerModule } from '@angular/material/datepicker';
import { MatDialogModule } from '@angular/material/dialog';
import { MatDividerModule } from '@angular/material/divider';
import { MatExpansionModule } from '@angular/material/expansion';
import { MatFormFieldModule } from '@angular/material/form-field';
import { MatGridListModule } from '@angular/material/grid-list';
import { MatIconModule } from '@angular/material/icon';
import { MatInputModule } from '@angular/material/input';
import { MatListModule } from '@angular/material/list';
import { MatMenuModule } from '@angular/material/menu';
import { MatPaginatorModule } from '@angular/material/paginator';
import { MatProgressBarModule } from '@angular/material/progress-bar';
import { MatProgressSpinnerModule } from '@angular/material/progress-spinner';
import { MatRadioModule } from '@angular/material/radio';
import { MatSelectModule } from '@angular/material/select';
import { MatSidenavModule } from '@angular/material/sidenav';
import { MatSlideToggleModule } from '@angular/material/slide-toggle';
import { MatSliderModule } from '@angular/material/slider';
import { MatSnackBarModule } from '@angular/material/snack-bar';
import { MatSortModule } from '@angular/material/sort';
import { MatStepperModule } from '@angular/material/stepper';
import { MatTableModule } from '@angular/material/table';
import { MatTabsModule } from '@angular/material/tabs';
import { MatToolbarModule } from '@angular/material/toolbar';
import { MatTooltipModule } from '@angular/material/tooltip';
import { MatTreeModule } from '@angular/material/tree';
@NgModule({
declarations: [],
imports: [CommonModule],
exports: [
MatAutocompleteModule,
MatBadgeModule,
MatBottomSheetModule,
MatButtonModule,
MatButtonToggleModule,
MatCardModule,
MatCheckboxModule,
MatChipsModule,
MatRippleModule,
MatDatepickerModule,
MatDialogModule,
MatDividerModule,
MatExpansionModule,
MatFormFieldModule,
MatGridListModule,
MatIconModule,
MatInputModule,
MatListModule,
MatMenuModule,
MatPaginatorModule,
MatProgressBarModule,
MatProgressSpinnerModule,
MatRadioModule,
MatSelectModule,
MatSidenavModule,
MatSlideToggleModule,
MatSliderModule,
MatSnackBarModule,
MatSortModule,
MatStepperModule,
MatTableModule,
MatTabsModule,
MatToolbarModule,
MatTooltipModule,
MatTreeModule,
],
})
export class AngularMaterialModule {}
Lastly, add the created module to the app module file.
// angular-material.module.ts
import { NgModule } from '@angular/core';
import { BrowserModule } from '@angular/platform-browser';
import { AppRoutingModule } from './app-routing.module';
import { AppComponent } from './app.component';
import { BrowserAnimationsModule } from '@angular/platform-browser/animations';
import { AngularMaterialModule } from './modules/angular-material/angular-material.module';
@NgModule({
declarations: [
AppComponent
],
imports: [
BrowserModule,
AppRoutingModule,
BrowserAnimationsModule,
AngularMaterialModule
],
providers: [],
bootstrap: [AppComponent]
})
export class AppModule { }
You are all set!
