GA4 - Report (Acquisition)

The acquisition report has three parts: overview, user acquisition, and traffic acquisition. This report provides information about how users find your site.

How The Data is Collected

Data is collected by the unit of a user. Each user can have multiple sessions and Each session can have multiple events. Users are diffentiated by reporting ID. A major differenct between the user acquisition and the traffic acquisition is that user acquisition only show new users while the other shows all the users by sessions

Overview

This report provides the overview of acquisition report. Each card has a drop down on its top right corner and this show if the data is sampled or not. When the amount of data exceeds 500,000, sampling is automatically applied.

User Acquision

This shows what source or medium new users use to find your site by sessions. You can also use campaign as a dimension if Ads and GA4 are linked (including search ads 360 or display and video 360).

Dimensions

You can choose one of the dimensions below (or add customized dimensions)

※ Channel is a group of sources that users use to find your site. Channles are the smallest unit to define sources and each source is categorized in a channel. This is automatically applied when auto-tagging is on. If you want to specify the source to masure the perpormance of each advertisement platform, you have to turn off the auto-tagging and manually configure the URL

 

▶ First user default channel group

New users in a session by channel groups (default channel list)

 

First user medium

New users in a session by meduims

 

First user source

New users in a session by sources (e.g., google, gmail,...).

 

First user source / medium

New users in a session by sources and mediums

 

First user source platform

New users in a session by advertisement platforms (e.g., google, gmail,...).

 

First user campaign

New users in a session by campaigns

 

First user Google Ads ad network type

New users in a session by Google Ads network types

 

 First user Google Ads ad group name

New users in a session by Google Ads group names

Metrics

Default metrics are as follows:

 

▶ New User (Auto)

The number of users who interacted with your site or launched your app for the first time (event triggered: first_open)

 

 Engaged Sessions (Auto)

The number of sessions that lasted:

  • longer than 10 seconds
  • or had a conversion event
  • or had 2 or more screen or page views

 Engagement Rate (Auto)

The percentage of engaged sessions (Engaged sessions divided by Sessions)

 

 Engaged Sessions Per User (Auto)

Number of engaged sessions per user (Engaged sessions / Users)

 

 Average Engagement Time (Auto)

The average length of time that the app was in the foreground, or the web site had focus in the browser

 

 Event Count (Auto)

The number of times your users triggered an event

 

▶ Conversions (Events marked as a conversion)

Sum of revenue from purchases, subscriptions, and advertising

 

▶ Total Revenue (Populated when 'purchase' event comes in)

Sum of revenue from purchases, subscriptions, and advertising

Traffic Acquision

This shows what source or medium new and returning users use to find your site by sessions. You can also use campaign as a dimension if Ads and GA4 are linked (including search ads 360 or display and video 360).
